Ian Preskett

ian preskettIan is ConnectSphere’s principle Software Asset Management (SAM) consultant. He has many years of IT experience.
Over the past 10 years Ian has specialized in SAM Process consultancy and until recently was the SAM Process and Maturity Practice Manager for a large reseller of software.
Ian’s philosophy is to ensure that SAM processes integrate with the service management processes to deliver highly effective SAM and reduce risk by maintaining software license compliance.

SAM Maturity

Ian has conducted numerous maturity measurements for clients to determine the ability of their SAM to support their business goals and control software.
He has used the ISO 19770-1 self assessment process, the NHS NIMM maturity model, Microsoft SOM maturity model and others.
Ian has enhanced Microsoft SOM to deliver consistant results while collecting sufficient information about the organisation and its current processes to create roadmaps and SAM plans.

SAM Strategy

Ian promotes the value of understanding the vision and strategy for SAM which is often overlooked in SAM projects. This is often agreed at IT management or IT director level.

SAM process design and implementation

Ian has worked with clients ranging in size from 600 to 100,000 PCs to access the current processes, agree a strategy, create a design and implement the solution. He ensures SAM policies are always created to control the processes.
All of Ian’s engagements are conducted in line with the ISO 19770-1 standard and the ITIL V3 framework. This ensures integration if the client is ITIL compliant, or provides ITIL ready processes for clients that have not already adopted ITIL.

SAM Industry Leadership

Ian is keen to promote the value of SAM to the market place, and is a committee member of the BCS Configuration Management Specialist Group. He has spoken at many BCS and joint BCS / itSMF conferences. Ian assisted with the ISO 19770-1 standard by reviewing the text, testing the self assessment engine and assisting with the early adopter program. Ian is currently assisting with the introduction of the enhanced version of the ISO 19770-1 standard. He has attended many FAST Round Table events and the SAM Practitioners forum.

SAM Training

Ian was the first candidate to pass the ISEB SAM practitioner exam, and is an approved ISEB instructor for the SAM essentials and SAM practitioner courses.
