Case Study: ISD (Integrated Systems Division)
The Client
---
ISD (Integrated Systems Division) is a division of the major multi-national electronic systems company AMS, which has a turnover in excess of 1.2bn Euros and an established customer base in over 100 countries. ISD works in a multi site, multi project environment with an engineering team exceeding 1000. As many projects have a life expectancy in excess of 15 years quality is paramount.
The Business Driver
---
Having experienced a number of mergers, resulting from the international consolidation of defence suppliers, the company faced significant challenges and wanted to adopt strategies that would minimise the impact of organisational changes on systems engineering and production. The division identified that it needed to improve its ability to manage change and increase engineering productivity by adopting a common Configuration Management (CM) framework across projects and sites. To comply with the companies quality objectives the framework would have to be based on recognised industry best practices and support their ongoing Capability Maturity Model initiatives. The correct solution would enable them to contribute to the division's high level “Business Winning” aspirations of best value for the customer, by applying people process and technology to achieve timely, better, cheaper, faster, delivery to the customer.

The Client is on track with the definition and deployment of their common Configuration Management framework. The feedback from those involved is very good with a positive attitude to change. “The training provided a consistent message and view for Configuration Management” “The discussions on managing change, the skills developed and the common Configuration Management framework that this training programme enabled has made us more prepared for the future. We are now better able to satisfy our need, to provide the best possible service for our customers by being more efficient, more effective and timelier” Steve Egginton (ISD Engineering Manager for Process Improvement Project) “Lots of issues and differences were aired but the workshop environment enabled people to arrive at consensus for deployment. These skill development events re-enforced and reminded me of the real impact of the Change Process” “We have six different Quality systems across our sites, which need to be rationalised., The workshop provided not only an opportunity for some free and frank dialogue but the distillation of the output from the workshop has captured what we need to do moving forward and will greatly assist our risk management. We left with a shared vision and a list of meaningful objectives” Bob Cook (ISD Quality Systems Manager) “The training has broadened my view of the potential scope to which Configuration Management can be applied not only to engineering but to the business as a whole.” Mike Bentley (Site lead Configuration Manger at Frimley) “We were very happy with the pilot that TrainingSphere ran for us and were very pleased to select them for this major training activity”. Alex Deans (Engineering Development Manager) “TrainingSphere were selected because “They listened, understood our need and were flexible in their approach to our requirements. On a number of occasions when I had to change dates at short notice they were very accommodating” Leanne Taylor (Learning and Development” advisor ) "If full benefit is to be achieved in newly merged organisations one aspect that needs to be fully understood and exploited advantageously is the opportunity and need to review, change and improve working practices, across the newly formed enterprise. This is especially important for those who provide services into their organisations and for those that more importantly use the provided services." Bob Cook (ISD Quality Systems Manager) |
